¨The Syndrome of Being Balanced¨

Balanced or Luke Warm

There is syndrome in today’s conservative churches that needs to be diagnosed and treated. It’s called “The Syndrome of being balanced” First we will examine this syndrome identifying some of the signs that indicate that you may have contracted it. After seeing how the sickness of being balanced can be diagnosed then we will proceed to the treatment.
In its beginning stages “The being balanced syndrome” will manifest it’s self in the following way… If and when you are challenged in some area of your life that you must give up to follow Christ you begin to worry about being balanced or going to far to one extreme then you can be sure that you are sick with the “Being Balanced Syndrome” If you are showing these signs of the first stages of the syndrome you should seek help immediately because few if any ever recover from the latter stages which we will now proceed to examine.
If this syndrome has progressed into its latter stages you will know you’re in critical condition if when you see someone who is following Jesus teachings in a radical way, taking his words literally by putting them into practice and you feel the need to admonish him to be more balanced. Once you begin admonishing others to be balanced you can be sure that you now have a contagious strain of the illness in its advanced stages. These are the worst signs and by far more contagious than the first. Those showing these signs have little hope of finding any cure.
If you are a sincere follower of Christ then you may know or have come across someone showing signs of the latter stages of “The being balanced syndrome”. They are often times people in leadership positions. It’s best to stay away from such as these and by no means ask their counsel, especially if they have already caused you to experience some of the first signs mentioned in the beginning stages. In this case it is always best to reprove them. This will cure you from “The balanced Syndrome” and give some hope of recovery to those in the second stages if they will listen.
In its last and final stages if no recovery is sought or found from the latter stages of this deadly illness the victim finally finds himself becoming a wolf in sheep’s clothing without hope. And finally he may even lay aside the sheep’s clothing. Anymore many of these wolves don’t even bother to use the sheep’s clothing. They just tell any sheep that have concerns that God just looks on the heart and not outward appearances... So the sheep have become too stupid and blind to even recognize the difference between a sheep and a full blown wolf. Besides this, most all the sheep are sick with the “Being Balanced Syndrome” and are on their way to becoming wolves themselves.
Now having said all that let us examine some of Christ’s teachings and see what happens when we try to balance them.
We can start with what Jesus taught about loving our enemies. “But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven…” Mathew 5:44,45 How can we balance this out so that a soldier going to war can still be a child of God? Well here’s a suggestion. Just make sure that before you shoot and kill someone that you really love them in your heart and if you have to drop a bomb on a building or something that you really are lovingly caring for all those inside.
Let’s look at another one… Jesus said “But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.” Mathew 5:39 How can we balance this one out? I guess we would have to turn the other very carefully in a balanced way.
Ok now for a really hard one. Jesus said “But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” Mathew 5:28 this is a really hard teaching to balance out, especially when we consider that the Bible says that no adulterer will enter into the kingdom of heaven. However men with a sever case of the “Balanced Syndrome” know that you can still sneak a little peek every now and then, and as long as you’re really carful not to think to much about what you saw you might not commit adultery in your heart. Women with a severe case of the balances syndrome will wear something pretty modest but still allow for that little peek here and there in their dress that the sick men are looking for because they know it’s important to be balanced.
Now here’s a real stumper… Jesus said “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” Mathew 6:14 Sorry I don’t have any ideas on how to balance this one out. I guess if you can’t forgive your enemies just ask God to forgive you anyways and hope that the Bible is wrong. Maybe we’ll just have to leave this one for the Bible seminary professors to figure out a way to balance out.
Oh and here’s another good one for the bible colleges to balance out. Jesus said ”whoever marries a woman who is divorced commits adultery.” Mathew 5:32 If you can balance this one out you can probably get a pretty high paying job as a pastor of a really big church.
Finally let’s look at one of Christ’s teachings that get the most abuse from those with the balance syndrome. Jesus said “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal” Mathew 6:19 , and Mathew 13:22 where Jesus taught that riches are like thorns that choke the word of God out of our lives. To balance this one out you need to ask yourself a couple of questions. How many thorns do you need to keep in your life to stay balanced? , and, how much of God’s word do you need to choke out to stay balanced?
Better yet lets look at an example of a church in the new testament who all came down with the balance syndrome and tried to balance out this very teaching… The church in Laodicea had taken great pains to balance out Christ teachings on riches and look what happened… Revelation 3:17 And right here we find one last teaching we can examine under the affects of the balance syndrome which pretty much sums up everything.
Jesus said “I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, will I vomit you out of my mouth.” Revelation 3:15 Ok let’s see what happens when we balance out being hot or cold. This won’t take a rocket scientist. Get yourself some hot water and mix it with some cold water and what you get is the good and balanced lukewarm mixture that Jesus himself was reproving here.
To deal with the “Balance Syndrome what we need to realize is that all this talk and admonishment about being balanced is just another excuse to be lukewarm. So if you find yourself sick with this illness you should seek treatment immediately before you get vomited out if His mouth just like he promised to do.
The treatment: Jesus said to him, “ You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.” Jesus didn’t say, “ you shall love the Lord your God with a balanced heart, with a balanced soul, and with a balanced mind.”

The Value of the Septuagint

The Bible of Jesus, the apostles, and the Early Christians… a burial ground of hidden treasures.
Introduction
Get ready ito dig into a burial ground of Lost truth
Almost two thousand years ago the apostle John penned the last words he heard from our
Lord…
For I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book; and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the book of Life, from the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. Rev 22:18-19
Most of us have read this passage at the end of the Bible spoken as a warning to those who would add or take away from His word. However there’s one thing most of us have never considered as we read this and that is that it doesn’t say that such a thing would never happen rather it is simply a warning to those who would do such a thing. In our discussion we’ll be looking at the Bible of Jesus and the apostles which was a Greek version of the Old Testament know as the Septuagint. Although you and I would never take away from what is considered canon today we should still be sincere enough about seeking the truth to ask an important question we want to address here in; Has anything been taken away from our old testament canon in the last two thousand years? With that in mind we can see that our Lords warning is also a call to us two thousand years later to make a diligent search to verify that we have all of what Jesus , the apostles, and the early believers considered to be scripture. Paul told Timothy that “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine” I Tim 3:16. Do you have all the scripture Paul had in mind when he made that statement? As we compare the Septuagint to our Old Testament, we will see that many things have been taken away from what God intended our Old Testament to be. Are you ready to dig for truth? If so, then join with me as we journey back through history to explore all the Old Testament canon Paul was referring to. Let me take you to a burial ground of lost truth. Let me take you to the Bible that Jesus, the apostles and the early Christians so highly esteemed also known as “Septuagint” . Let’s see what the New Testament bares witness to, and listen to what the early Christians themselves had to say regarding scripture treasures that we no longer have.
What is the Septuagint?
When , Where and How it was Formed

The Septuagint (LXX) was the first Greek translation made of the Old Testament in Alexandria , Egypt during the third century B.C. by seventy two translators. The word Septuagint comes from the Latin word for seventy.1
Justin Martyr and Irenaeus early Christian writers writing about the year160 said this…
“Ptolemy, king of Egypt, when he had built the library in Alexandria, and by gathering books from every quarter had filled it, then learnt that very ancient histories written in Hebrew happened to be carefully preserved; and wishing to know their contents, he sent for seventy wise men from Jerusalem, who were acquainted with both the Greek and Hebrew language, and appointed them to translate the books; and that in freedom from all disturbance they might the more speedily complete the translation, he ordered that there should be constructed, not in the city itself, but seven stadia off, as many little cottages as there were translators, so that each by himself might complete the translation and enjoined upon those officers who were appointed to this duty, to afford them all attendance, but to prevent communication(of one translator with another), in order that the accuracy of the translation might be discernible even by their agreement. And when he ascertained that the seventy men had not only given the same meaning, but had employed the same words, and had not failed in agreement with one another, not even to the extent of one word; but had written the same things, and concerning the same things, he was struck with amazement, and believed that the translation had been written by divine power, and perceived that the men were worthy of all honor, as beloved of God; and with many gifts ordered them to return to their own country. And having, as was natural, marveled at the books, and concluded them to be divine, he consecrated them in that library. These things, ye men of Greece, are no fable, nor do we narrate fictions; but we ourselves having been in Alexandria, saw the remains of the little cottages still preserved, and having heard these things from the inhabitants, who had received them as part of their country’s tradition. We now tell to you what you can also learn from others, and specially from those wise and esteemed men who have written of these things, Philo and Josephus, and many others. That the books relating to our religion are to this day preserved among the Jews, has been a work of Divine Providence on our behalf…” Justin Martyr2
“For before the Romans possessed their kingdom, while as yet the Macedonians held Asia, Ptolemy the son of Lagus, being anxious to adorn the library which he had founded in Alexandria, with a collection of the writings of all men, which were [works] of merit, made request to the people of Jerusalem, that they should have their Scriptures translated into the Greek language. And they—for at that time they were still subject to the Macedonians—sent to Ptolemy seventy of their elders, who were thoroughly skilled in the Scriptures and in both the languages, to carry out what he had desired. But he, wishing to test them individually, and fearing lest they might perchance, by taking counsel together, conceal the truth in the Scriptures, by their interpretation, separated them from each other, and commanded them all to write the same translation. He did this with respect to all the books. But when they came together in the same place before Ptolemy, and each of them compared his own interpretation with that of every other, God was indeed glorified, and the Scriptures were acknowledged as truly divine. For all of them read out the common translation [which they had prepared] in the very same words and the very same names, from beginning to end, so that even the Gentiles present perceived that the Scriptures had been interpreted by the inspiration of God.” Irenaeus3

What “scripture” was Paul referring to when he wrote Timothy… “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine” I Tim 3:16 ?
Why the ones he knew from childhood…”.that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures,”IITim3:15
Which ones were those? Well Timothy was from Lystra a Greek speeking town born of a Greek and Hellenistic Jew. Act16:1 “Then he came to Derbe and Lystra. And behold, a certain disciple was there, named Timothy, the son of a certain Jewish woman who believed, but his father was Greek.” So the “sacred writings” that Timothy knew since childhood would have been the Bible of the Greek speaking Jews which is the Septuagint. In fact Paul Just finished quoting Num 16:5 from the Septuagint in II Tim 2:18 “The Lord knows those who are His”. Our masoretic text reads “The Lord will show who are His”.
When Paul said “all scripture” Timothy knew he meant the Septuagint and the Early Christians did as well…
Melito to his brother Onesimus,(year 170)
“greeting:—
As you have often, prompted by your regard for the word of God, expressed a wish to have some extracts made from the Law and the Prophets concerning the Savior, and concerning our faith in general, and have desired, moreover, to obtain an accurate account of the Ancient Books, as regards their number and their arrangement, I have striven to the best of my ability to perform this task: well knowing your zeal for the faith, and your eagerness to become acquainted with the Word, and especially because I am assured that, through your yearning after God, you esteem these things beyond all things else, engaged as you are in a struggle for eternal salvation.
I accordingly proceeded to the East, and went to the very spot where the things in question were preached and took place; and, having made myself accurately acquainted with the books of the Old Testament, I have set them down below, and herewith send you the list. Their names are as follows:—
The five books of Moses—Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy; Joshua, Judges, Ruth, the four books of Kings, the two of Chronicles, the book of the Psalms of David, the Proverbs of Solomon, also the Book of Wisdom, Ecclesiastes, the Song of Songs, Job, the books of the prophets Isaiah, Jeremiah, of the twelve contained in a single book, Daniel, Ezekiel, Esdras. From these I have made my extracts, dividing them into six books.”4
“Let the following books be esteemed venerable and holy by you, both of the clergy and laity. Of the Old Covenant: the five books of Moses—Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy; one of Joshua the son of Nun, one of the Judges, one of Ruth, four of the Kings, two of the Chronicles, two of Ezra, one of Esther, one of Judith, three of the Maccabees, one of Job, one hundred and fifty psalms; three books of Solomon—Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and the Song of Songs; sixteen prophets. And besides these, take care that your young persons learn the Wisdom of the very learned Sirach. But our sacred books, that is, those of the New Covenant, are these: the four Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John; the fourteen Epistles of Paul; two Epistles of Peter, three of John, one of James, one of Jude; two Epistles of Clement; and the Constitutions dedicated to you the bishops by me Clement, in eight books; which it is not fit to publish before all, because of the mysteries contained in them; and the Acts of us the Apostles.
Let these canonical rules be established by us for you, O ye bishops; and if you continue to observe them, ye shall be saved, and shall have peace; but if you be disobedient, you shall be punished, and have everlasting war one with another, and undergo a penalty suitable to your disobedience. -Apostolic constitutions (Year 390)5
If you’ve taken the time to follow the Link and Look over the Septuagint you’ll notice as David Bercot states in one of his books that “The Septuagint of the first century contained various books now referred to by protestants as the Apocrypha. Those books weren’t lumped together in one section of the Septuagint , as though they somehow stood apart from the rest of the Old Testament, rather they were scattered throughout the Old Testament being placed in whatever section of the Old Testament they would Naturally fit whether it was in the historical, prophetic, or poetical writings. So when Paul said that “all scripture” is inspired wouldn’t Timothy have naturally understood him to be speaking about all of the works contained in the Septuagint?” 6
Many however reject writings not found in our version of the Old Testament claiming that the Apostles didn’t quote from scriptures that aren’t in our Old Testament.
Or did they?
Jude 1:14 “Now Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men also, saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints, to execute judgment on all, to convict all who are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have committed in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.”
There’s an Old Testament Prophecy that they were reading not found in ours.
Here’s some more…
Jude 9 ” Yet Michael the archangel, in contending with the devil, when he disputed about the body of Moses, dared not bring against him a reviling accusation, but said, “The Lord rebuke you!”
IITim3:8 “Now as Jannes and Jambres resisted Moses, so do these also resist the truth”
Have you ever read where Michael rebuked the Devil or when Jannes and Jambres resisted Moses? The apostles did quote from scripture that we no longer have as part of our Old Testament however even if they didn’t, that rule of only canonizing Old testament Books that Jesus and the apostles quoted from doesn’t apply unless you want to discredit Old Testament books that are part of our Old Testament as well that the Apostles didn’t quote from.*
*Remember none of the New testament writers ever quoted from Ezra, Esther or Ruth but that isn’t grounds for rejecting these writings as canonical.
The Septuagint was Jesus Bible
Quotes from Jesus in the Gospels that come from the Septuagint rather than our Old Testament text

Have you ever noticed when you compare the passages in the New Testament where Jesus quotes from the Old Testament you find in many places that it differs from the way our Old Testament reads?
Let’s take a look…
Matthew 21:16 and said to Him, “Do You hear what these are saying?” And Jesus said to them, “Yes. Have you never read,‘ Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants You have perfected praise’?”
vs.
Psalm 8:2 Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants You have ordained strength… .

Matthew 12:20-21 Jesus… …warned them not to make Him known, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying:…“…A bruised reed He will not break, And smoking flax He will not quench, Till He sends forth justice to victory; And in His name Gentiles will trust…”
VS.
Isaiah 42:3-4 “ A bruised reed He will not break, And smoking flax He will not quench; He will bring forth justice for truth. He will not fail nor be discouraged, Till He has established justice in the earth; And the coastlands shall wait for His law.”
(Where are the Gentiles that will trust him?)
Matthew 15:8-9 “ These people draw near to Me with their mouth, And honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me. And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’”
VS
Isaiah 29:13 Therefore the Lord said: “ Inasmuch as these people draw near with their mouths And honor Me with their lips, But have removed their hearts far from Me, And their fear toward Me is taught by the commandment of men”,

Luke 4:18-19 “ The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed; To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD.”
VS.
Isaias “The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon Me, Because the LORD has anointed Me To preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives,
(notice the blind aren’t mentioned) And the opening of the prison to those who are bound To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD”
Although the differences aren’t that great in these instances they are still significant enough to show that Jesus was quoting from a different Old Testament text than the one we have. It is proof enough to show anyone who cares that when we read our Old Testament we are not reading the exact words Christ was reading when he read his. Jesus was reading and quoting the Septuagint. For the most part His quotes are exactly the way the Septuagint reads.
But let’s not stop there.
The Septuagint was the Apostles Bible
Quotes from the Apostles in the New Testament that come from the Septuagint rather than our Old Testament text

Matthew 3:3 For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah, saying:“ The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘ Prepare the way of the LORD; Make His paths straight.’”
Isaiah 40:3 The voice of one crying in the wilderness: “ Prepare the way of the LORD; Make straight in the desert A highway for our God.”
Stephen was “ full of faith and power…” and “…Then there arose some from what is called the Synagogue of the Freedmen (Cyrenians, Alexandrians, and those from Cilicia and Asia), disputing with Stephen. And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the Spirit by which he spoke. and they came upon him, seized him, and brought him to the council…
Then we read Stevens discourse where he goes through the Whole Old Testament where in he quotes in Acts 7:14 Then Joseph sent and called his father Jacob and all his relatives to him, seventy-five people.
But our Bible says…
Genesis 46:27
And the sons of Joseph who were born to him in Egypt were two persons. All the persons of the house of Jacob who went to Egypt were seventy.
Exodus 1:5 All those who were descendants of Jacob were seventy persons…
Ok stop Steven! Was it seventy or seventy five? What’s going on here?
Do you see how serious this is getting? Steven was supposed to be filled with the Holy Spirit speaking the inspired word of God that will be forever recorded in the New Testament and he’s misquoting the Old Testament. Or is he? Well if you’ve been following the train of thought were on you should be asking yourself what the Septuagint says in Gen46:27 and Ex 1:5.
If we believe in the infallibility of the word of God and the Inspired words of our New Testament writers then we better ask ourselves if there isn’t something wrong with our Old Testament today because the Apostles were reading something else.

Acts 8:31-3 …So Philip ran to him, and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah, and said, “Do you understand what you are reading?” And he said, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” And he asked Philip to come up and sit with him. The place in the Scripture which he read was this:
“ …In His humiliation His justice was taken away, And who will declare His generation? For His life is taken from the earth.
Not this
Isaiah 53: 8 “ He was taken from prison and from judgment, And who will declare His generation? For He was cut off from the land of the living;”
Maybe we need a Philip to come running to us and ask…“Do you understand what you are reading?”

Romans 2:24 For “the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you,” as it is written.
Isaiah 52:5 Now therefore, what have I here,” says the LORD, “ That My people are taken away for nothing? Those who rule over them Make them wail,” says the LORD, “ And My name is blasphemed continually every day.”
Hold on here! If I was a Jew reading Paul’s rebuke directed at me and had the Old Testament we use, I would make sure I corrected Paul on that one. I’d let him know that it is not written “Because of me” or “among the gentiles” for that matter. Or maybe I’d get myself another version of the Old Testament to suit my preference.
Well as we’ll see here shortly that’s most likely what did happen but unfortunately you and I got stuck with the Old Testament the unbelieving Jews preferred instead of the one Paul was using.
Romans 9:27 Isaiah also cries out concerning Israel: “ Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, The remnant will be saved.”

Isaiah 10:22-23 “For though your people, O Israel, be as the sand of the sea, A remnant of them will return;”

Hey what about them getting saved?
Hebrews 1:6 But when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says: “ Let all the angels of God worship Him.”
Deuteronomy 32:43 “ Rejoice, O Gentiles, with His people; For He will avenge the blood of His servants, And render vengeance to His adversaries; He will provide atonement for His land and His people.”
Hey where are the angels of God that are supposed to worship Him?
Hebrews 10:5-6 Therefore, when He came into the world, He said “ Sacrifice and offering You did not desire, But a body You have prepared for Me. In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin You had no pleasure.”
Psalm 40:6 Sacrifice and offering You did not desire; My ears You have opened. Burnt offering and sin offering You did not require ..
Hey! What happened to the “body You have prepared for Me”
That was a direct prophesy about Christ Coming to earth in the flesh. Either that was what David wrote in Psalms or he didn’t. So who messed up the translation? Maybe someone who didn’t want to hear a prophesy about Christ.
Also explore: Romans 15:12 /Isaiah 11:10 , Gal3:13/Deut21:23, Heb13:6/Psalm118:6, James4:6/Proverbs 3:34, IPeter2:22/Is53:9, IPeter4:18/ Proverbs 11:31

Here’s another not so obvious difference that David Bercot found that’s even More serious as he states in his book “Common Sense”…
“Such variances between the Septuagint and Masoretic text (the Hebrew text our Bibles were translated form) are fairly numerous. In fact one of the cardinal teachings of Christianity turns on one of these variances. We have all read Mathews quotation from Isaiah 7:14 in Matthew 1:22 So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.” What I did not realize until recently was that the Hebrew Masoretic text (that’s our text) does not say “the virgin shall be with child” it says “the young woman shall be with child”. No wonder the apostles and their disciples chose the Septuagint over the Masoretic text.
Unless you use the Revised Standard Version, If you look up Isaiah 7:14 in your old testament , you will probably find that it reads “virgin” instead of “young woman”. That’s because translators have fudged on their use of the Masoretic text in order to conform to the cardinal Christian doctrine of the virgin birth. But how honest is that? Can we ignore the Septuagint and treat it as a “translation full of errors” but then when one of those “errors” supports a major Christian doctrine , go over and borrow from it? Are we seeking truth when we do that?” 7
Brother Bercot has a good question for all of us “Are we seeking truth?”
By now I think you can see that the Bible of Jesus and the Apostles was the Septuagint. This is nothing new. Rather it is a simple historical fact that has been accepted universally by most all historians and scholars whether they favor the Septuagint over the Masoretic or not. With that established we could end our discussion here because that fact alone should be enough to convince any one that has any love for the truth that the Septuagint in it’s entirety is a treasure chest waiting to be rediscovered and explored. Before we do that I would like to explore a few more aspects about the Septuagint that define it’s value to us.

The Septuagint was the Early Christians Bible
Quotes From the Early Christian that come from the Septuagint

“…And the Lord is pleased to cleanse Him of his stripes. If ye make an offering for sin, your soul shall see a long-lived seed. And the Lord is pleased to relieve Him of the affliction of His soul” Clemente of Rome quoting Isaiah 53:10-11 from the Septuagint.8

This is an important verse to take note of because our Masoretic text says the exact opposite “Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief.” In Isaiah 53:10

The early Christians also understood the atonement of Christ’s sacrifice in a way that agrees with how the Septuagint reads. That is Christ’s death on the cross was a ransom paid to deliver us from Satan rather than a payment made in order to appease an angry God. Christ’s death to the early Christians was a heroic death inflicted by Satan rather than God.

Mark 10:45: "For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many."

Origen wrote: "The payment could not be [made] to God [be]cause God was not holding sinners in captivity for a ransom, so the payment had to be to the devil."

This understanding is better known today as the “Classical” or “Ransom” view of the Atonement as opposed to the modern view known as “The satisfaction theory”. (For more on this see my blog post on “Christ’s Sacrifice: Satisfaction or Ransom A Comparison of two views of the Atonement”)

“Do not be a stretcher forth of the hands to receive and a drawer back of them when it is time to give” Didache yr 100 quoting from Sirach4:3

When you can do good defer not because “Alms delivers from death” Polycarp yr 135 quoting from Tobit4:1010

“…The assembly of the wicked surrounded me; they encompassed me as bees do a honey comb…” “…Woe to their evil soul because they have counseled an evil counsel against themselves, saying -Let us bind the just one for he is displeasing to us-…” Barnabas yr70-130 quoting from Psalm 22:17 and Wisdom2:12 11

Who discredited The Septuagint
How the Early Christians maintained The Septuagint while the Unbelieving Jews rejected it.

Now that we’ve seen how important the Septuagint was to the first believers lets now answer the question pertaining to what happened to the Septuagint. We’ll look at the history leading up to the exclusion of some of the books originally included in the Septuagint and why our scriptures today are translated from a different Hebrew Text than the Hebrew text the Septuagint was translated from.

According to Justine Martyr a believer of the second century the unbelieving Jews were rejecting the Septuagint along with some of the books it contained because there were valuable prophecies of Christ to be found in them…

“But I am far from putting reliance in your (Jewish) teachers, who refuse to admit that the interpretation made by the seventy elders (i.e. The Septuagint) who were with Ptolemy [king] of the Egyptians is a correct one; and they attempt to frame another (i.e. The mesoretic text). And I wish you to observe, that they have altogether taken away many Scriptures from the translations effected by those seventy elders who were with Ptolemy, and by which this very man who was crucified is proved to have been set forth expressly as God, and man, and as being crucified, and as dying;” Justine Martyr yr 160 12

David Bercot also recognizes this in his book “Common Sense” where he states “The writings of the Apocrypha were not officially shut out of the Jewish canon until the close of the first century. There is no doubt in my mind that the Jewish religious leaders rejected those works primarily because Christians were using them so successfully to convict the Jews. For example the descriptions of the heavenly Son of God in the book of Wisdom were too obvious to ignore.
Furthermore, could those religious leaders deny that the Book of Wisdom had prophesied about Jesus and his confrontation with their forefathers, the scribes and the Pharisees, when it said:

He professeth to have the knowledge of God: and he calleth himself the child of the Lord.
He was made to reprove our thoughts. He is grievous unto us even to behold: for his life is not like other men's, his ways are of another fashion. We are esteemed of him as counterfeits: he abstaineth from our ways as from filthiness: he pronounceth the end of the just to be blessed, and maketh his boast that God is his father. Let us see if his words be true: and let us prove what shall happen in the end of him. For if the just man be the son of God, he will help him, and deliver him from the hand of his enemies. Let us examine him with despitefulness and torture, that we may know his meekness, and prove his patience. Let us condemn him with a shameful death: for by his own saying he shall be respected-Wisdom 2:13-20

That’s an incredible prophecy! No wonder the scribes didn’t want the Jews to read from that book anymore! And since that book was part of the Septuagint, is it any wonder that the Jewish leaders quickly dumped the entire Septuagint as well?

Who were the Jewish leaders who effectively closed the Book of Wisdom and other books of the Apocrypha out of the Old Testament canon? Why none others than the spiritual sons of the scribes and Pharisees, whom Jesus called “blind guides”, “fools”, hypocrites”, “whitewashed tombs”, and the “sons of those who murdered the prophets” (Matt.23:13-31). These were the very same men who murdered and imprisoned the early Christians.
Do we Protestants realize what we have been doing? In the selection of our Old Testament canon and text, we have been siding with the unbelieving scribes and Pharisees-the “Brood of vipers-against our faithful Christian brothers and sisters of the first and second centuries. What bitter irony! Maybe it is we who are the blind guides!”13

This is exactly what the primitive believers testify to. Here is Justin martyr again yr 160 writing to unbelieving Jews.

“I have not attempted to establish proof about Christ from the passages of Scripture which are not admitted by you (Jews) which I quoted from the words of Jeremiah the prophet, and Esdras, and David; but from those which are even now admitted by you, which had your (Jewish) teachers comprehended, be well assured they would have deleted them, as they did those about the death of Isaiah, whom you sawed asunder with a wooden saw.” 14

Origen in order to counter the attacks on the Septuagint made being made by the unbelieving Jews prepared a six fold parallel edition of the Old Testament including the Hebrew text, A Greek transliteration of the Hebrew, and four Greek translations including the Septuagint. The Hexapla showed where the other translations either added to or took away from what the church was using.15
“Wherefore I think no other supposition is possible, than that they who had the reputation of wisdom, and the rulers and elders, took away from the people every passage which might bring them into discredit among the people. “ –Origen yr 240 16

Jerome: the beginning of Catholic adherence to Masoretic text 17

We’ve already seen how the content of the Septuagint was unfavorable to unbelieving Jews who opposed Jesus and His disciples. By the end of the first century the Septuagint had become such a threat to the Jewish leaders that they decided only to use a Hebrew text known today as the Masoretic text. They went so far as to declare that the Septuagint be discarded. By the end of the second century the Jews had two new Greek translations made to replace the Septuagint which they declared a faulty translation.
The Jewish Scribes had strict guidelines they followed in copying new scrolls from the ones that began to become old and worn out. Their practice involved making a careful translation from an old scroll and then completely destroying the old scroll by burying it in the ground to decay.- So once the Jewish religious leaders declared that the Masoretic Hebrew text was the only valid text it was only a matter of time before all other texts would eventually be discarded without any more copies being made. By the second and third centuries the Jews began to argue against the Christians by claiming that the Septuagint was a sloppy Greek translation of the Mesoretic text , not recognizing that the Septuagint was a translation made from an entirely different Hebrew text than the Masoretic text. Although the Hebrew text the Septuagint was translated from is no longer in existence today some of the Dead Sea scrolls attest to Hebrew texts other than those on which the Masoretic Text was based. In many cases, these newly found dead sea scroll texts agree with the LXX version.

It wasn’t until the about year 400 That the Catholic church under Bishop Damisis authorized a man named Jerome to make a Latin translation which became known as the Latin Vulgate. Everyone thought that Jerome would translate the Bible from the Septuagint. To do his translation Jerome traveled to Bethlehem where he was influenced by the Jews. He was eventually persuaded by the Jews to use the masoretic text for his Latin translation instead of the Septuagint. It is important to note however that the Latin Vulgate translated by Jerome did retain the works known as the apocrypha in spite their being excluded by the unbelieving Jews. However Jerome through this Jewish influence did come to the conclusions that…

1. The Septuagint was a sloppy translation of the Hebrew text.
2.The translators of the Septuagint both purposely and carelessly added things to the text and left things out.
3. The Jews were still in possession of the original Hebrew text that the Septuagint was translated from.
4. Jesus and His apostles recognized the Septuagint as a corrupt text.
5. Origen wrote the Hexapla because he was unsatisfied with the Septuagint.
6. He would improve the western church with his new translation The Latin Vulgate.

Unfortunately these myths that Jerome initiated are still held today by many Bible scholars.
Jerome argued saying “Now let my critics show that there is anything in the New Testament which comes from the Septuagint but which is not found in the Hebrew and our and our controversy is at an end.”

We’ve already seen plenty in the New Testament that comes from the Septuagint rather than the Hebrew Masoretic text so according to Jerome himself the controversy is at an end. This is why It should have been no surprise when the vast majority of churches refused to use his new Latin translation known as the Latin Vulgate.

Although The Latin Vulgate was at first unanimously rejected by the Churches, the fact that Jerome had been commissioned by the Pope gave the Latin Vulgate some acceptance which eventually lead to it’s use in the conversion of the European Germanic peoples. That’s why by the middle ages the Latin Vulgate became known as the Bible of Western Europe.
-Luther and the reformers maintain the error of the Catholics

By the time of the reformation the reformers blindly accepted the six myths regarding the Latin Vulgate and the Septuagint originated by Jerome. Like many other errors of the Catholic church which Luther and the reformers never departed, Jerome’s error was no exception. The reformers and those who followed in their foot steps continued to use the Masoretic text Jerome’s Latin Vulgate came from for their new translations. This is why Jerome’s error is reinforced today in popular translations such as the King James and others. This is also the reason why many Bible scholars today still maintain Jerome’s myths.

-Protestant Evangelical exclusion of the Apocrypha

Because of Jerome’s mistakes the Septuagint never was passed on to western Christians. However there were aspects of the Septuagint that continued to be included in the western Bibles even until the eighteen hundreds. Some of those aspects include the Old testament books that are found in the Septuagint but not found in the Masoretic text. Today these books are referred to as The deuterocanonical books or the apocrypha. Both of the terms given to these books are misleading. The word deuterocanonical is misleading since it comes from the Greek meaning 'belonging to the second canon' and indicates the hesitation with which these books were accepted into the canon by some. However the term does not mean non-canonical. Many who do not accept these books as part of the canon of Scripture designate them instead by the term “Apocrypha which simply means hidden. For simplicities sake we’ll simply refer to these works as the Apocrypha in our discussion. 18

It is important to take note of the place the apocryphal works retained during a time in which the church was moving further and further away from what the Primitive Church held to. The Apocrypha continued to have a place in the translations made by the reformers. Even the King James translation originally contained these works although their value was minimized due to their exclusion from the Masoretic text. There were however groups during the reformation that esteemed the apocrypha on the same level as scripture as Peter Hoover points out in His book “The Secret of the Strength”. “The Anabaptists had no clear position on the "canon of Scripture." They accepted, and freely quoted from all the books of the Apocrypha, including the third and fourth books of Ezra and the third book of the Maccabees.” 19

It wasn’t until long after the reformation that the Apocrypha began to be omitted from the Authorized Version when Puritans and Presbyterians began to argue for the complete removal of the Apocrypha from the Bible. In 1825 the British and Foreign Bible Society got involved in the controversy. From that time on, the Apocrypha has been eliminated from practically all English Bibles.

Conclusion

Don’t stop here.
My intentions are not to give the idea that all of the Bible translations like the King James version we are familiar with are worthless translations that should be discarded. I continue to use the King James version both for my personal reading as well as evangelism. For the most part I don’t think the differences are significant enough to become a key salvation issue. However I do believe that the contradictions found in the Mesoretic text are significant enough to be a stumbling block to new sincere truth seekers. Hopefully this discussion would serve as a sufficient introduction to what is for many unexplored territory. So let me encourage you not stop here but to make your own rediscovery of the bible that Jesus and the apostles used.

Garbage Eaters, Beach Boys, Hillbillies and a ponzi scheme somewhere in between.

My Testimony… foolishness, foolishness, foolishness,

Before I start to share my testimony with you there are some scriptures that you should be aware of as you read this…

For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God… For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, …God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. …but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, I Corinthians 1:18,21,23 –If you can´t understand these verses now you might after reading my testimony.

I´m the oldest of three brothers. Growing up non-Mennonite background the only thing I thought I knew about the Mennonites was that they dressed funny and don´t talk to you. The only thing I knew about serving the Lord was growing my hair long and playing guitar in a rock band, that’s why when I started seeking the Lord I thought the liberal Pentecostals were the closest thing to the truth. Becoming a dedicated evangelical listening to prosperity doctrine preachers helped me to focus on becoming successful and start learning how to make money, so my parents didn´t discourage me to much about being with the Pentecostals, especially since I was excelling studying civil engineering. That monkey business went on for about 2 years until I met some poor traveling evangelists (AKA The Garbage Eaters or Jim Roberts Group as labeled by outsiders) preaching on the campus I was attending. Although they don´t use internet you can read what their critics have to say at http://www.religioustolerance.org/body_chr.htm or http://nfishel.tripod.com/index.html . They told me I had to forsake all to follow Christ and so I checked to see if that’s what Christ actually taught and realized that the Garbage Eaters had more truth than the Evangelicals. I had already had thought s about doing something like that so it wasn’t long before I had to explain to the proud parents of a son with a high grade point average studying civil engineering why he was going to forsake all to travel around with a bicycle and a back pack with a bunch of guys with long beards eating out of dumpsters and preaching the gospel. Well you can imagine how that went so I won´t go into any more detail. So as I was working on getting myself into one of the most despised groups in the USA my brother Adam was working on getting himself into one of the most highly elite special forces groups in the US air force (AKA The para rescue jumpers, or the P.J.s) you can read about them at http://www.pararescue.com/ About the time I made it into the ranks of Jim Robert´s garbage eaters my brother had just made it into the ranks of the para rescue jumper group. Since my parents would still have my brother Adam in the air force to be excited and proud about I gave him that responsibility. So anyways, with our excited parents full approval my brother was off to be a sky diver while I was off to be a dumpster diver while my youngest brother Nate stayed home and watched.

This became my first experience with a radical conservative group of Christians that preached things like nonresistance , modest dress , the permanency of marriage and other sound doctrines that I had no idea were in Christ’s teachings. This was a wonderful experience. I was learning amazing things from these brothers. We even got on sixty minutes a couple of times just like the rescue jumpers… http://www.rickross.com/reference/brethren/brethren4.html Brother Jonathan got interviewed by Dianne Sawyer and had the privilege of calling her a grievous painted up Jezebel right on national television. She in turn labeled us as one of the most dangerous cults in America. I learned how to live on absolutely nothing in this world but depend on everything in Christ’s teachings. I thought we were the only ones doing any of those teachings since the time of the apostles… That was until I started reading about some of the early Christians and early Anabaptists who I found to be a lot like us garbage eaters . As my research deepened I soon found that us garbage eaters could learn a thing or two from the early Christians and early Anabaptists. It didn´t take long though to figure out that the y didn´t want to learn to much from the early christians which lead to an interest in finding out whoever these Anabaptist people might be today. I finally found some of their descendents in Costa Rica (AKA the Beachy Amish Mennonite) while traveling around with my bicycle and back pack and realized that they had a lot to learn from the most dangerous cult in America so I joined up with the Beachy bunch. Well it didn´t take me long to figure out that they didn´t want to learn to much from the most dangerous garbage eating cult in America or the early Christians so I decided just to try to learn what I could from those Beachy boys.

About that time my brother Adam just got back from fighting a war in Afghanistan and was on his way to start another one in Iraq so I let him know that he shouldn’t be doing that sort of thing if he wants to be any sort of Christian. He thought about it for a while and then decided it would be a good idea to quit playing war in the air force deal. So he developed his own convictions about nonresistance, left the military and went on to become the disciple of a false prophet named Newan who was a rich pastor of a Pentecostal Charismatic group living in adultery which is why the church he joined turned out to be ponzi scheme. I better explain that a little… Newan was running a multimillion dollar ponzi scheme which he called a church so it wasn´t long before the FBI caught up to him an threw him in prison. He probably got himself on sixty minutes as well. But Adam would have been further ahead just to have joined Americas most dangerous garbage eaters group from the very start like I did. My parents would even agree with that. Anyways with the help of a worried dad and the Beachy boys we got my brother out of that deal before all that happened. He came down to spend some time with me and The beach Boys and now he´s going to a charity chruch. In the mean time I´m down here in Peru fiddling around in the Andes mountains still trying to figure out how to preach the gospel and be a good Mennonite at the same time when I meet some evangelists strait from the Ozark hills preaching on the street in Lima… And it was then and there that I realized that I had found the perfect mix between the most dangerous cult in America and the Mennonites. They helped me figure out my Mennonite/preaching dilemma since they´d just got done trying to do the same thing and realized that you really can´t preach the Gospel and be a good Mennonite at the same time. I should try to explain that a little more or,,, maybe I shouldn´t.. Oh well , if you´re not offended by now it probably won´t make any difference anyway…

These Ozark hill boys, Kevin and David (both non Mennonite background) had joined a Mennonite church (Aka The Fellowship Mennonites) which was a little like the one I joined except for the fact that they felt wearing suspenders was the best way to preach the gospel. Well these Ozark hillbillies weren´t content just wearing suspenders and decided to go preach on the streets as well. That upset some of the suspender fellowship because they couldn´t understand why the hillbillies couldn´t just be happy wearing suspenders. So on top of having a rule to keep the hillbillies in suspenders the suspender fellows made another rule to keep the hillbillies off the street from preaching Saturday evenings. The hillbillies had a hard time cooperating with that rule so the suspender fellows had to excommunicate the hillbillies. So that’s why I quit trying so hard to be a good Mennonite joined up with the hillbillies and started preaching the gospel and got excommunicated by The Beach Boys.

Now don´t get me wrong in all this. This isn´t some bitter criticism. I learned a lot from and highly esteem all these brothers who have helped me along from the most dangerous garbage eating cult in America to the Amish Beach Boys in Costa Rica and now I ´m blessed to be a part of a group of hillbillies that have learned about all they can from the same kind of situations mentioned above.

I hope you will put up with a little of my foolishness; but you are already doing that. –the apostle Paul 2 Corinthians 11:1

I hope that these verses helped you understand my testimony or at least my testimony helped you understand these verses and if not its probably because your testimony is missing some dangerous garbage eaters or some Amish beach boys , or some Ozark hillbillies or maybe even a ponzi scheme…

The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned. 1 Corinthians 2:14

Modern sanitized synthetic lifeless Christianity is false Christianity… Real Christianity; the kind Paul preached, is foolish Christianity.

Lord bless, -Brian

The Beard

Why I have a Beard

As we sit down together at the dinner table to eat there’s something that causes an uneasy feeling. Something that annoys you a bit and yes, something that provokes you to ask the question… Why do you have to have a big beard?
There are some things that a lot of people aren’t ready to understand yet or can’t understand anymore and the beard is one of them.
Normally I would simply tell you that when your ready to understand I’ll explain it to you but until then , you just keep eating your soup with your shaven face while I eat mine with my beard on.
However, since you’re probably my mom or dad or some confused sincere believer or maybe even someone who gets asked the same kind of questions as I do and aren’t quite sure how to respond, I think you probably deserve a more respectful response that that , so here it is…

Are you ready? Probably not, but here it is anyway…

The Beard
The Beard is not a pretty thing.
The beard is not a popular thing.
In fact it’s a little bit of an eye sore and,
If it gets a little bit of food stuck in it,
It becomes every bit of an eye sore.

Maybe that’s why most women don’t like the beard,
But I think there’s still another reason.
I have a friend who continually worries his wife with his beard. She told me herself that she’s afraid of how much her husband might let it grow out.
She’s afraid of it.
She’s afraid of her husbands potential beard growing capabilities.
She’s afraid it might get out of control… Her control that is.
Now that’s something admirable , when a man isn’t afraid to have something that threatens his wife’s authority over him. Men are supposed to have something like that and that’s probably why God gave it to them. It shows who’s in authority. Women aren’t supposed to have something like that and that’s why God didn’t give them beards. In fact women are supposed to have just the opposite of something that shows authority and that is something that shows submission to authority.
The Bible says that God wants women to have long hair and a veil as a symbol of submission to authority. (1Corinthians 11) and I think we could safely assume that God gave men short hair and a beard as symbol of authority as well. That’s why men that don’t want that kind of responsibility would rather their wife’s not have a veil and women that don’t want their husbands to have that kind of responsibility would rather them not have a beard.
I know God didn´t give all men the same kind of beard. Some men just don´t have much of a beard to let grow and thats nothing to be ashamed of as long as they´re give in it all they got growing the beard God gave them.
I also know some men have beards that don’t care about submitting to God just
like some women have veils and don’t care about submitting to their husbands but if when a man wears a beard it means he’s submitting to God just like
when a women wears a veil it means she’s submitting to her husband then that means the woman isn’t in control. Most women don’t like that because it means that at any given moment her husband might do or say something that God wants him to do or say that she doesn’t like and she’s just going to have to put up with it. Maybe that’s a part of the real secret behind having a beard.
Oh, you want to say something???
But the beard could get food stuck in it!” You say.
Yes , true…
And here in lies another part of the mystery behind the secret of the beard.
Lets face the facts…
The beard could get food stuck in it… and if it’s long enough,
The beard could get stuck in the food. Yes,
Soup could even run down into it.
Or it could even run into the soup.
The beard leaves you exposed to these potential risks. These are all highly probable possibilities that leave an uneasy and annoying feeling in the mind of all those whom you dine with…
It could happen,
It will happen ,
And its only a matter of time until it does.
So between now and when it does I’m creating an uncertain uneasy feeling in the atmosphere for all who watch on. That’s right,
I’m an accident waiting to happen.
I´m an offense waiting to take place.
I’m a man …
This isn’t anything a wimp can do.
This isn’t something a woman can do.
You gotta have some… Well you know… Some guts to do it. It’s all about being a man and that means living on the edge, exposing yourself to potential risks, and not being afraid of anything.
Jesus was that way, and by the way… Jesus had a beard. That’s why I don’t mind if I make you feel uneasy, if I create a question mark in your mind, or if I create an uncertain expectancy. That’s what Jesus did when people sat down to eat with him. They never knew what he was going to do or say next that would offend or make someone feel uncomfortable and create an awkward scene. They only knew that…
It could happen,
It would happen ,
It was only a matter of time until it did and then they’d have to ask him once again “Do you know that they were offended when they heard that?”? (Mathew15:12)
Jesus knew it would happen too and until it did he was creating an uncertain uneasy feeling in the atmosphere for all who watched on. That’s right… He knew they perceived him as an accident waiting to happen amd an offense waiting to take place, right there in front of everybody to see. He was doing something only a man could do, and by the way did I mention the Jesus had a beard…
I offered my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard; I did not hide my face from mocking and spitting.” Isaiah 50:6
For a beard to be “pulled out” it has to have some substantial length to it. If Jesus had a nice neat trimmed up short little beard like your wife and boss wants you to have or possibly no beard at all then how else would he have fulfilled this prophecy?
I assume that the apostles had beards too. How else would they have followed Jesus?
And of course the Early Christians had beards which they took pretty seriously as well.
Here’s what they had to say about it…

But for one who is a man to comb himself and shave himself with a razor, for the sake of fine effect, to arrange his hair at the looking-glass, to shave his cheeks, pluck hairs out of them, and smooth them, how womanly! And, in truth, unless you saw them naked, you would suppose them to be women... …For God wished women to be smooth, and rejoice in their locks alone growing spontaneously, as a horse in his mane; but has adorned man, like the lions, with a beard, and endowed him, as an attribute of manhood, with shaggy breasts,-a sign this of strength and rule.”
- Clement of Alexandria about the year 195 Vol.2 pg. 275 of “Ante Nicene Fathers”

This, then, the mark of the man, the beard, by which he is seen to be a man, is older than Eve, and is the token of the superior nature.”
- Clement of Alexandria Vol.2 pg 276 of “Ante Nicene Fathers”

For it is not lawful to pluck out the beard, man's natural and noble ornament.”
-Clement of Alexandria Vol.2 pg 277 of “Ante Nicene Fathers”

The beard must not be plucked ¨You will not mar the figure of your beard¨”
–Cyprian writing about the year 250 Vol.5 pg 553of “Ante Nicene Fathers”

Hopefully after all this you can see that this isn’t some extreme , radical idea that I cooked up myself. No , not at all. This is some extreme, radical idea that God cooked up when he decided to create man in his own image and if that bothers you,,, You can shave your face like a woman. But as for me and my face, well, just let me know if something gets stuck in my beard or,
If my beard gets stuck in something,
And I’ll pull it out.

The Cross or Works Salvation

The difference between the cross and works salvation

Can anyone tell me what’s wrong with this picture?
The cross is an instrument of death…
No need to decorate it with flowers.

The cross is the commandment or commandments Christ gave that you dread the most.
Works salvation is the commandment or commandments Christ gave which you like the most.

The cross is the place where we say “None my will but yours be done”
Works salvation is the place where we say “Some of my will and yours be done”
